I can smell warm pumpkin doughnuts wafting through the air from the moment I step foot onto the grounds at Circle S Farms in Grove City. There’s just enough chill in the air to complement the brilliant orange colors of the decorative pumpkins and create the perfect sensory welcoming committee to usher in fall. In the distance, I hear children giggling at the petting zoo, and I see excited families waiting for their turn at a tractor ride through the farm.

For 34 years, Circle S Farms has engaged families in the things that make fall so wonderful on the farm: corn mazes, pumpkin picking, animals, hay rides, homemade food and great big barns where children frolic in hay and play hide-and-seek in the many cubbies and corners.

The “fun barn” at Circle S Farms has an added feature of slides nestled within the thousands of bales of hay where children can enjoy sliding into a giant pile of straw.

For the younger set, the “scarecrow cave” is a perfect maze created out of shorter bales of hay. I love watching the very young children enjoy a maze experience of their own while their older siblings tackle the corn maze or the spectacular, eye-popping sunflower maze.

I caught up with owner Ethel Sullivan who tells me the Circle S Farm vision that she created with her husband, is all about family.

“We want people to make memories and make a tradition out of their visits,” said Ethel. “We like to teach families about agriculture by giving them farm experiences like tractor rides and picking pumpkins.”

If all of the activities make you hungry – no problem! The Pumpkin Café serves up fresh chicken and noodles and a full menu of home-cooked food.

You cannot leave without some of their famous pumpkin doughnuts and some coffee or hot coco to fend off the cold.

Fall Fun Days, going on now at the farm, is open every day through October 31, 2014.

Circle S Farms is located on London-Groveport Road in Grove City.
